Our continued collaboration with Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) OFFICIAL recently took us to the Sang’oro Aquaculture Research Centre—one of Kenya’s most important hubs for freshwater aquaculture innovation.
Led by Kennedy Comba, COO of The Aquaculture Consortium (TAC), the team—drawn from Jumbo Fish Farm (JFF) together with our Norwegian partners from Val Skoler AS under the Norec Exchange Program—spent several days engaging directly with the technical team at the station.
For those unfamiliar with Sang’oro, the center plays a critical role in advancing aquaculture in Western Kenya. The station focuses on:
- Fish seed production and hatchery management
- Domestication of indigenous species such as African catfish
- Development of cost-effective, nutrient-rich aquaculture feeds
- Capacity building for farmers, students, and technicians
Under the leadership of Dr. Kevin Obiero, Assistant Director at KMFRI, Sang’oro continues to contribute significantly to research and training that strengthens the aquaculture value chain across the region.
But this visit was more than just a courtesy engagement.
Working side-by-side with the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) OFFICIAL technical team, our The Aquaculture Consortium delegation helped repair and revive several pieces of equipment that had been stalled for years, while also sharing practical field knowledge from commercial aquaculture operations. The exchange created an environment of mutual learning, technical collaboration, and problem-solving.
True to the spirit of partnership, the learning went both ways.
Our team deepened its technical knowledge in fish feed development, while also gaining access to promising alternative feed ingredients such as Azolla, which will be tested and integrated at Jumbo Fish Farm as part of our efforts to develop more sustainable and cost-efficient feed strategies.
Moments like these remind us that the future of aquaculture will not be built in isolation. It will be built through partnerships between research institutions, industry, and international collaborators—combining science, innovation, and practical field experience.
We are grateful to the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) OFFICIAL Sang’oro team for their openness, collaboration, and shared commitment to strengthening Kenya’s blue economy.
The journey continues.
